A Note From Karen
Those of us who knit and crochet know the many benefits we receive from the crafts we love. However, there is much more to this story.
After reading the article, In Mindful Knitting, It’s the Journey, Not the Scarf, in the Wall Street Journal, I began digging deeper and discovered quite a few references to studies conducted to evaluate the effects of crafting activities.
A very brief synopsis of this research indicates that those of us who practice crafts are likely to be more successful in smoking cessation, weight loss, managing stress, eating disorders and other serious health issues. Most interesting is that if these activities occur in social settings, they may delay the onset of memory loss.
Listed below, you will find several links to the research:

A Note from Karen
My thanks to all of you for keeping Knitting Temptations such a busy shop! Your enthusiasm is both motivating & inspiring. It is our pleasure to assist you in solving problems and selecting purchases. We love to see your projects in process and completed. Please send us pictures or stop in the shop to share your work.
April is full of interesting skill building classes! In addition, the staff and I are bursting with ideas for our second Annual Summer KAL! We had a great time last year and want to carry this tradition into 2019. Details coming soon!
Most importantly, please mark your calendar for LYS Day on Saturday, April 27. Created by TNNA’s Yarn Group (The National Needlework Association), Local Yarn Store Day is an opportunity to celebrate fiber artists and to show support for small brick-and-mortar yarn shops. This year is the second annual LYS Day. We look forward to seeing you!
Be sure to read all the details below and mark your calendars.

Building with Lace Series /temptingtidbits/classes/building-with-lace-series/ /temptingtidbits/classes/building-with-lace-series/#respond Fri, 28 Jul 2017 17:37:47 +0000 /temptingtidbits/?p=4483 Students and Fans of Michelle Hunter’s “Building” series:

Knitting Temptations is thrilled to offer a new skill-building series, based on Michelle’s NEWEST book, Building with Lace.

The series, to begin September 6 at Knitting Temptations, is a unique chance to take the series in its entirety with the designer and expert instructor, Michelle Hunter!

This ten-class series focuses on lace techniques that will delight both the novice and experienced lace knitter alike. The project is a gorgeous sampler shawl worked in Rylie by HiKoo. This luxuriously soft yarn is the perfect choice to showcase the high impact stitches. The shawl is knit in one continuous piece (no seaming!) and measures approximately 22″ x 72″. As with Michelle’s previous series, each month of the course will focus on skills and stitches to build your lace knitting skills. The techniques include advanced decreases and increases, Japanese stitches, beading, expert edges, original stitch patterns, classic lace techniques, and so much more!

We have two class sessions available: afternoon 2:00pm-4:00pm AND evening 6:00pm-8:00pm. Seats are limited to 24 per session and filled on a first-come, first-served basis.

Each of the classes will meet once a month on the first Wednesday of the month. (Please see the complete schedule below.)  To help you judge the time commitment, the amount of knitting each month is more than a Building Blocks square, but less than a Building in Color panel.  Each section is approx. 120 stitches wide and 50 rows high.  Unlike Michelle’s other series, each section MUST BE completed before moving on to the next one. As with her other series,  Michelle has videos in place to help you at home.

The series registration fee is $250.00, and includes the book, Building with Lace, which is distributed at the first class in September. The course fee is due IN FULL at the time of registration. Payments may be made with check, cash, or credit card by calling (614) 734-0618 or stopping in the shop during business hours. If paying for the course in full creates difficulty, please contact the shop owner, Karen Wilkins. She is happy to work with potential students to make this wonderful course possible for all.

We understand that at times unforeseen events occur in life that may necessitate you to drop the course after registering. However, if you drop the course prior to August 15, you will receive a 50% course refund. Unfortunately, no refunds can be given after September 1.

A complete list of course supplies is included in this letter. As with ALL our classes, it is our policy that you MUST purchase your yarn and other class supplies at Knitting Temptations.

Knitting Temptations is thrilled to offer the Building with Lace series with Michelle. As many of you know, she is reaching new audiences far and wide with the Knit Purl Hunter Progressive Needles Knit-Along series sponsored by Skacel, her book and magazine publications, as well as workshops and appearances around the country. We are honored by her commitment to Knitting Temptations.

Please let us know if you have any questions. We look forward to hearing from you!

  • US 6 (4 mm) or size needed to obtain gauge. A 32″ sharp-tipped circular needle is recommended.
  • Size F (3.75 mm) crochet hook
  • 628 Size 6 round beads. Purchase the beads at a later date after class discussion.

  • 50 (or more) yards smooth, light-colored worsted-weight yarn and appropriate sized needles to be used as a swatch to practice new stitches in each class

GAUGE
22 stitches and 29 rows = 4″ in stockinette.

Please take the time to work a gauge swatch prior to the first class to ensure the correct yardage.

Knit a gauge swatch:  Cast on 30 stitches and working for 40 rows in stockinette. Measure the inside of the swatch to assess the number of stitches in 4″. If your gauge is different than the gauge stated above, change needle sizes and try again. Remember, loose stitches use more yarn and may require additional skeins. Swatching is important!

Building in Color Series /temptingtidbits/classes/new-building-in-color-series/ /temptingtidbits/classes/new-building-in-color-series/#comments Sun, 02 Apr 2017 18:22:53 +0000 /temptingtidbits/?p=4036 We are excited to announce that Michelle Hunter has scheduled another Building in Color series beginning Tuesday, June 13, 2017, and continuing on the 2nd Tuesday of each month for 10 additional months. We have two sessions available: afternoon 2:00pm-4:00pm OR Evening 6:00pm-8:00pm.

Building in Color is a skill-building series; the only prerequisite is that students MUST BE proficient in the knit, purl, cast on and bind off stitches. Using three contrasting colors, students knit 10 panels, one panel each month, to learn new stitches and colorwork techniques. (No pesky prep rows or “squaring up” necessary!) The 10 panels are then joined together creating a unique and beautiful afghan onto which a border is added.

The course registration fee is $250.00, and includes the book, Building in Color, which is distributed at the first class in June.

NEW Gathering in July! /temptingtidbits/projects/new-gathering-in-july/ /temptingtidbits/projects/new-gathering-in-july/#comments Mon, 15 Jun 2015 15:16:51 +0000 /temptingtidbits/?p=3787 WHAT’S THE BUZZ ABOUT?

beesWe are kicking off a new gathering in July — FRIDAY KNITE KNITTING hosted by Beth Monahan!

Join Beth for her first gathering to knit the wildly popular Beekeeper’s Quilt designed by Tiny Owl Knits. Have you seen the cute wall hanging in the our meeting/class room? Would you like to make your own? The blanket can be made as big or as small as you would like because it is constructed out of little stuffed honeycomb-shaped puffy pockets called “hexipuffs.”

The Beekeeper’s Quilt is the perfect project to knit on the go! This blanket is knit one hexipuff at a time using approximately 20-25 yards of fingering-weight yarn per puff. Puffs travel lightly and work up quickly!

A great way to make this project EVEN MORE FUN is with a “yarn swap.” Perhaps you have a FEW little leftovers from sock or other projects you have knit. It’s okay; as all knitters know, you CANNOT throw those away!!! Gather up all your fingering-weight leftovers as we put them to good use in this pr0ject!

Beth will show you how to make the hexipuffs using all the needed techniques. Beth will also demonstrate fun finishing options such as embellishing your hexipuffs.

unnamedWe hope you will join in this social knitting opportunity to meet other “Beekeepers” and learn from the Queen Bee, Beth! 🙂 You can see others’ progress, get moral support, and the most fun part — swap yarn to make more hexipuffs!

Fridays, 5:30pm – 7:30pm, on July 10, July 17, July 24 & July 31

EACH PARTICIPANT IS REQUIRED TO PURCHASE 1 skein of Tosh Sock, Tosh Merino Light, or 5 Unicorn Tails. Beth will show you how to measure out 25 yards to make little hanks to make each hexipuff. Your little hanks can then be swapped with other participants!

The project fee is $45. Supplies needed (not included in the fee):

  • Yarn: Fingering-weight, 1 skein (e.g. Madelinetosh Sock or Tosh Merino Light) or 5 Unicorn Tails. Each puff takes approximately 20-25 yards of fingering-weight yarn.
  • Needles: 32″ circular or DPN in size US 3-4
  • Pattern: The Beekeeper’s Quilt by Tiny Owl Knits, available for purchase on Ravelry for $5.50
  • Tapestry needle
  • Recommended: a ruler is helpful, but not required to measure out hanks

SPOTTED FEVER

One 2-hour class
Instructor: Michelle Hunter
Skill level: Easy Knit

Thursday, June 18, 6:00pm – 8:00pm (FULL!) OR
Tuesday, June 23, 2:00pm – 4:00pm OR 6:00pm – 8:00pm *evening session added by popular demand!

Learn to knit this whimsical shawl where opaque polka dots dance on a sheer background. The design is made possible through a magical combination of Navajo knitting and Intarsia. Unlike traditional Intarsia, only one skein is used at a time with no interlocking or ends to weave in at the end of the project.

NO previous experience with Navajo knitting or Intarsia is required! You’ll become an expert in these fast, fun, and easy-to-learn techniques in class!

Using fingering-weight yarn, the pattern is available in two sizes. Both sizes are perfect for warming the shoulders on a chilly evening (or in a chilly, overly air-conditioned room). The larger shawl would make a stunning wrap for the modern bride!

The class fee includes the pattern, expert finishing tips, and hands-on instruction for this unique technique. We will also explore how to incorporate the skill into an endless array of design possibilities.

This class is suited for knitters comfortable with the knit and purl stitches and basic basic shaping.Sizes: Small (Large) – 60″ (76″) wide. 33″ (40″) deep, at center point.Gauge: Approximate 16 sts and 23 rows = 4″ in St st after blocking.

Supplies needed:

  • Yarn: 760 (1,100) yards fingering-weight
  • Needles: 32-40″ US 9 circular or size needed to obtain gauge. Bring extra needles (bigger and smaller) to adjust size if necessary.
  • Stitch markers
  • Blunt-tip tapestry needle

Sample knit with La Jolla by Baah! Yarn, 2 (3) skeins, in colorway Burmese Ruby. Pictured in Large.

You may register for classes in person or by calling the shop at (614) 734-0618 during regular business hours. We require that you make payment in full when you register.
