Have you been thinking about learning stranded knitting (the technique used in Fair Isle knitting)? This traditional technique is used to create intricate-looking patterns with multiple colors. The lovely Dark Shines cowl, designed by Amy Gleixner, is a sampler of classic Fair Isle motifs. It starts out with short floats (color changes) and then works up to longer ones, making it a perfect project for those new to stranded knitting!

This class will focus on the basics of two-color, stranded knitting with two hands, knitting in the round, and chart reading.

Supplies needed:

  • Yarn: Worsted-weight, 165 yards Main Color (MC) and 110 yards Contrasting Color (CC)
  • Needle: 24″ circular in sizes US 5 (3.75mm) and US 7 (4.5mm)
  • Tapestry needle
  • Stitch markers

Shop sample knit with Rowan Pure Wool Worsted, one ball of each in two colors.

Please purchase your supplies prior to class day. There is pre-work for this class.

Class pre-work:
Using smaller needle and MC yarn, cast on 144 stitches. (In our sample, the mustard is the MC.) Join for working in the round.

Round 1: *Knit 2, Purl 2, repeat from * to end of round.
