Argyle socks are a timeless classic long considered the pinnacle of sock knitting. Learn to knit these treasured beauties in a style that combines both traditional and modern methods. The leg is knit flat from the top down for precise Intarsia diamonds. The leg is then seamed. The remainder of the sock is knit using the magic loop or any preferred circular knitting technique. This class is perfect for experienced sock fans ready to elevate their skills.
The first class will cover Intarsia, weaving ends and chart reading strategies. The second class covers seaming, duplicate stitches and heel set up.
Pattern is included with two sizes (Medium, Large) to fit most women and men.
Students must be experienced sock knitters. Previous intarsia experience is not required.
Yarn – fingering weight sock yarn. Select colors with a high contrast for optimum results.
• Main Color – approx. 250 -350 yards. Yardage varies due to foot length.• Contrasting Color 1 – approx. 40 yards
• Contrasting Color 2 – approx. 40 yards
Needles – Two sizes are needed. The smaller size is for the cuff and the larger size is for the remainder of the sock. Gauge varies with every knitter and their chosen yarn. For best results, swatch with selected yarn in stockinette that is knit flat (back and forth in rows). Once desired appearance is achieved, use that needle for body of sock and chose one size smaller for cuff.
• Size 0 – 2 (2 – 3mm) 32” circular needle for magic loop method or 24” for two circ method. For example, knit the body with #2 (2.75mm) and cuff with #1 (2.5mm). Pay close attention to mm size of needles!
Also needed: Stitch Counter, markers, tapestry needle
Approximate Gauge = 7-8 stitches/1”
With Main Color and smaller needle size, cast on 62 (74) stitches. Do NOT join in the round!
Row 1. (RS) K2, *p2, k2; repeat from * to end.Row 2. (WS) P2, *k2, p2; repeat from * to end.
Repeat above rows until cuff measures 1 ½” or desired length ending after Row 2.
